Adam Silver says Brittney Griner is being ‘illegally held’ in Russia

NBA commissioner Adam Silver once again addressed the status of Brittney Griner, the Phoenix Mercury center who remains detained in Russia.

“I didn’t want to not mention Brittney Griner while I’m here. It’s been now over a hundred days since she’s been illegally held in Russia,” said Silver during Thursday’s press conference before Game 1 of the NBA Finals Boston won at Golden state.

“I think it’s something that all of us should be heard on, contacting your representatives and others. I will only say we are working in lockstep with the US government and outside experts on trying to expedite her release in any way we can. Certainly, our hearts go out to her and her family, and just are eager for her safe return. And so I join my colleagues in the WNBA in making reference to her as well.”

May 6, 2022; Phoenix, Arizona; USA; Mercury's head coach Vanessa Nygaard talks with Sophie Cunningham (9) before she comes to the court during the home opener against the Aces.

First-year Mercury head coach Vanessa Nygaard said civil rights leader, Reverend Jesse Jackson, spoke to her about Griner’s situation after Tuesday’s loss at Chicago in a rematch of last year’s WNBA Finals the Sky won, 3-1.

“He specifically grabbed me and wanted to know what he could do to help,” Nygaard said after Tuesday’s game as she was wearing a “We Are BG” pennant in support of Griner.
